Crows and Wolves

Crow. Shamanic Healing Arts, SeattleThis winter, while the ground was still frozen I noticed little crocuses emerge full and mighty, enduring wind, rain, and even snow. There they stood much stronger than their seeming fragility and I had to smile at their boldness. And the crows, everyday they would flock to our neighborhood also enduring the weather, no hat or rain boots. The crocuses filled me with hope and reminded me of the inherent strength in our nature. The crows, they let the elements run off their wings, making their way through gusting winds, and show up anyway, every day.

I was reminded to look beyond what is before me, to what is right in front of and all around me in nature. How it can inform, and re-inform our soul about where we come from, and what we are made of. And, how we can tell another story, one that generates good “medicine”, even if we only tell it to ourselves.

I will leave you with a classic story to enjoy. Which wolf will you feed?

Story of Two Wolves

A Grandfather from the Cherokee Nation was talking with his grandson.

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.”
“One wolf is evil and ugly: He is anger, envy, war, greed, self-pity, sorrow, regret, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, selfishness and arrogance.”

“The other wolf is beautiful and good: He is friendly, joyful, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, justice, fairness, empathy, generosity, true, compassion, gratitude, and deep VISION.”

“This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other human as well.”

The grandson paused in deep reflection because of what his grandfather had just said. Then he finally cried out; “Oyee! Grandfather, which wolf will win?”

The elder Cherokee replied, “The wolf that you feed.”
